Addition is the process of finding the total when two or more items are brought together. addition problem

Addend is a number that is being added to another number.
Sum is the total found when two or more items are added together.  It is the answer to an addition problem.
12+6=18, 12 is an addend, 6 is an addend, 18 is the sum



Addition Steps: (without regrouping)
(1) Add the digits in the far right column.
(2) Write the sum in that column.
(3) Move left to the next column and add those digits.
(4)  Write the sum in that column.
(5) Repeat steps 3-4 until there are no more columns to add.

regrouping steps Addition Steps: (regrouping)
(1) Add digits in the far right column.
(2) If the sum is more than 9, regroup,put the number in the ones place at the bottom, and the number in the tens place at the top.
(3) If the sum is 9 or less, place the sum in that column
(4) Move left and add those digits (including any regrouped numbers at the top, if there are any)
(5) Repeat steps 2-4 until there are no more columns to add.





addition without regrouping Addition:
  • When working with large numbers (larger than one digit) rewrite the problem so it is vertical.
  • When you rewrite the problem, put the largest number on top.
addition with regrouping Addition with regrouping:
  • Only one number can be in a place value slot.
  • Find the sum of a column, if it is more than 9 then you need to regroup. 
addition with decimals Addition with decimals:
  • Add like you normally would, but don't forget the decimal.
  • Just like numbers, decimals should line up with each other.
